Car Recs?

The upside of moving away from the city is that I no longer have to take public transportation.  The downside of moving away from the city is that I no longer can take public transportation.  Which means...I need a new car.
I'm thinking I want some type of small to mid-size SUV or cross-over.  Ideally this:

The Volvo XC60 - I come from a devout Volvo family, but I don't think it would be the wisest choice for two new homeowners.
The challenge is I will be driving a lot, so I want something with decent gas mileage - but also want space (esp. for the puppy).  We don't have a truck or anything to haul things with and we plan on becoming Home Depot regulars so it will come in handy for those runs.  Plus, I just like being up high.

SO, please tell me, what do you drive?  Do you like it?  What is your dream car?

  1. I drive a Honda crv and really love it. I was choosing between a brand new basic one and a 2 year old one with leather seats and all the bells and whistles- chose the used one (from carmax) and I LOVE it! :)

  2. This is MY dream car too coming from the same devout volvo family! I went to take it for a test drive and it was so fun! Too much brand new though so I ended up with a used 2007 XC90, larger I know and not really a crossover but I LOVE it. I tried the Murano and the Mazda crossover. The Murano won over the Mazda but the Volvo beat them both. Safety first. Good Luck!!

  3. I so wish I could upgrade- but honestly my Ford Escape totally fits the bill. Good-ish gas milage for a mini-SUV; perfect for the dog (I've even been able to clean doggie throw up); and I can haul everything I've ever wanted to. But yes, a Volvo, Audi, or BMW would be awesomeness.

  4. I also drive a CR-V, and I love it. I got it a year after my mom's car accident (I drove a Civic at the time of the accident, and I loved it, but I felt too dwarfed by all the other huge cars on the road and it added to my anxiety during that time period). The CR-V is built on the same chassy, meaning it is the same exact size as a Civic, it just sits higher up. The gas mileage is good for a small SUV, and it has been an overall great and dependable car (and I feel safe). I have had it for 4 years and aside from new tires and break pads, it hasn't required any other major fixes.

  5. My husband and I just bought a Hyundai Santa Fe (mid size SUV). Now, before people judge the Hyundais (as they used to suck), I've had a Hyundai Elantra (small sedan) for 3 years (no major problems) and they have a killer 10 year warranty, are loads cheaper, and my 5'10" self can sit comfortably in the back seat. Major points...it was less than $30k fully loaded (with GPS)! :)

Ok, I sound like a commercial

  6. I love my 2008 Honda Civic, but it sounds like you want a little more room than that. (Its seats do fold down though, and my sedan has a pretty big trunk! 40mpg ftw, also!!) My husband drives a Nissan Rogue. It's a small, all wheel drive SUV (we also looked at the CRV, but it felt too 'van like' for us with its captain chairs and such). It gets excellent gas mileage (30+ mpg highway) and has a lot of room if you want to go on a trip or have your dog riding with you. Ours is fully loaded and was around 30k. Another one I really like is the new Honda Crosstour - it's AWD and it's kind of a sporty hatchback/wagon type of thing. Bigger than the Civic, but not quite a SUV. Check it out!

  7. We were thinking of getting a GMC Terrain (32 MPG highway) but we realized it'd be too small for us, so we're on to the full-size crossovers now. Blegh. I'm just so dreading a car payment, since I've never had one, and we just paid off the hub's Acura.

  8. We have the Volvo XC60 and love, love, love it!! I'm pretty sure the late '10 models have better mileage. Call me if you ever want to drive it.

  9. I'm getting a Camry soon, fun! A friend of mine has the Nissan Rogue, the new crossover SUV. I have no idea how it is on price, but I have to think it's lower than the Volvo (which I LOVE btw).
